OCCUPATION | CENTRAL COAST

Farm workers

The Central Coast drives California’s national dominance in the agricultural industry and is home to historic farm worker labor movements. Despite these movements, farm workers—particularly immigrant workers—have continued to struggle to attain good pay and healthy working conditions. The future of the occupation is equally as precarious: AgTech firms, many headquartered just north in the Bay Area, are designing and deploying automation technologies for managing and harvesting crops. Therefore, farm workers find themselves in a double-bind that requires consideration by policymakers and other stakeholders.
