OCCUPATION | FAR NORTH

Caregivers

The population of the Far North is aging faster than all other regions of the state, owing to the low influx of new residents. As a result, many of the region’s residents depend on public health services, including MediCal, Medicare, and Medicaid. Additionally, the supply of healthcare workers is too low to meet the needs of aging residents. Home healthcare workers fill much of this gap. Despite their critical work and inability to do their jobs remotely, salaries remain low, a reality that should be a target of policymakers who seek to improve access to high-quality healthcare.
